The World of Communications in 2016

By David Potter, Founder, President and CEO of Source
As seen in the May/June 2006 issue of Telecom Reseller

Twenty years ago executives thought talking over a data connection would be impossible. Today telecom think tanks are expanding wireless communications far beyond what was merely imaginable just several years ago. This technological progress hints to the speed and degree of communications evolution over the next ten years. Although the exact state is difficult to predict for 2016, the industry-altering changes that will come are certain.

Perhaps the most influential one will be evaporation of the wire-based telecom industry. Although it will take decades to completely disappear, there will cease to be new equipment and application development for traditional telephony.

Manufacturers, distributors and resellers will be operating in a converged-solutions market using applications and the Internet as the network. Much like how the telegraph gave way to telecom, traditional telecom will transition to IP telephony. To survive the rapidly-changing times, industry players will need to invest in technology and reconsider current business models.

Looking forward, consumers and business leaders should also focus on technical knowledge. Over the next decade, expect to invest in employee training and education for applications and devices. Being prepared to adapt to the next technology wave will be key for survival and success.

Borderless growth experienced from the Internet and convergence technologies will be a link between states, nations and continents. Communication is only limited by technology, which is guaranteed to exponentially. Applications that support IP telephony, especially VoIP, will ensure global connectivity.

Though 2016 is still a decade away, the new technology is not on the horizon. It is here, due to the interaction of IP networks. Keeping an eye on the future of telecom and reinventing your company accordingly will be the true test of transitioning into convergence and broadening business services to support future communication needs.
