2000 Census Case Study

SOURCE’s Solution for the U.S. Census in 2000.

Situation
In 1999, SOURCE signed an agreement with the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) for 390 Lucent Legend systems to be installed across the United States. Under the terms, SOURCE was to handle the management and project implementation of all 390 complex telephone systems in support of the U.S. Department of Commerce's Census 2000.

SOURCE accepted the challenge from the government to provide project management, preconfiguration and testing, asset management, installation and maintenance support. In the end, SOURCE turned GSA's goals into results.

Challenges
It was a large requirement, and timing was everything. All of the 390 systems had to be installed on a rigid schedule that required completion of all aspects within 90 calendar days. Each system installation was unique; some were installed on American Indian reservations, some in historical landmark buildings, and some in construction trailers, across the continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico.

Solution
SOURCE met the challenge of the installation and the further challenge of the de-install that had to be completed in 60 calendar days following the completion of the Census. A missed date could result in another month's rent or a lease extension costing thousands.

Nothing was business as usual - the solution required thinking outside the box and an uncanny ability to adapt to changing requirements.

SOURCE was there to get the job done and done right. Fortunately, the Census is only taken once every 10 years, but the planning has already started for the 2010 Decennial Census, and the requirements are no less stringent. SOURCE has proven itself and its ability to succeed in the large-scale project arena.
